Safety, Health and Environment

GENERAL PRINCIPLES
BOSTIK is committed to conducting our activities in a manner that safeguards the health and safety of our employees, our customers, the general public, and preserves our natural resources.

As Adhesives Division, member of the TOTAL group, BOSTIK follows the TOTAL Health, Safety and Environment standards.. The TOTAL Safety and Environment Charter describes the requirements that apply to all BOSTIK sites and activities. See the web site www.total.com for more information on TOTAL group HSE policy.
All BOSTIK sites and entity shall implement an Health, Safety and Environment management system. The general policy shall be implemented locally developing the appropriate organization, policies, objectives and indicators, action plans, rules and guidances, methods and tools. Their proper implementation shall be verified through internal audits.

SAFETY AT WORKPLACE: OBJECTIVES AND RESULTS
BOSTIK’s objective is to achieve zero occupational accident through a continuous improvement initiative.
One occupational safety indicator that BOSTIK monitors in particular is the total recordable incident rate (TRIR), or the number of incidents with or without lost time recorded for our own and contractor employees, expressed per million man-hours worked. The criteria used by our businesses to classify accidents are similar to widely-used international benchmarks, such as those of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC).
The safety action plan approved in early 2002 is targeting a 66% reduction in the total recordable incident rate over four years.
In 2006, the overall frequency rate of recordable accidents showed a noticeable improvement (66 %) perfectly in line with the objectives. The lost time accident frequency rate also showed an improvement (60%). Internal awards in the TOTAL group encourage the sites that recorded the best safety performance. For example, the Chemical branch distributed its Safety Awards. Ibos (France) , Barrow (UK) and Rockdale (USA),Twinsburg (USA), Stafford (UK) and Seremban (Malaysia) received an award.

REDUCING INDUSTRIAL RISK
BOSTIK designs and builds safe plants for which the risks have been carefully identified and analyzed. Clean technologies are used wherever possible, in particular with regard to the reduction at source of emissions and by-products. As regards existing plants, various improvement plans have been formulated on the basis of regular critical analysis and feedback in order to reduce major risks. Firefighting and crisis management exercises are regularly led.

INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE AT WORK
BOSTIK aims to eliminate all causes of occupational illnesses by implementing an active prevention policy applicable to every production site. Raising awareness, specific training, substitution of products, and the involvement of everyone concerned, are the key success factor of this progress initiative.

INVENTING NEW PRODUCTS TO PRESERVE ENVIRONMENT
BOSTIK has numerous examples of product developments which prove its commitment to propose "green" products to its customers, protecting the environment while answering or even anticipating in the requirements of its partners and in the regulatory evolutions.
Numerous projects have the objective to replace solvented adhesives. The purpose is to limit the emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC).
Our researchers finalize easily recyclable adhesives. The car industry watches closely the recyclability of its products via lists of authorized raw materials. Our adhesives take into account these lists and answer perfectly the requirements of recycling.

PROMOTING PRODUCT STEWARDSHIP
Right from the research stage, BOSTIK integrates health, safety and environmental criteria, in the product development. Further down the line, the Company applies the same degree of rigour to the packaging, labelling, preparation of safety documents (safety data sheets), and transport in order to guarantee optimum conditions for the storage, shipment and use of its products.
The relationship with customers includes technical assistance aimed at optimizing the use of the products for a greater protection of people and the environment.

REDUCED IMPACT OF COMPANY ACTIVITIES ON THE ENVIRONMENT
All BOSTIK production sites monitor the characteristics of their emissions and wastes rigorously and systematically. Performance indicators provide a regular assessment of their environmental performance. Action plans are implemented to reduce our significant impacts on the environment.
For example, we invest in VOC destruction units in several of our facilities around the world.

PROMOTING ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT
Systems are in place to manage our environmental performance, as well as safety and quality performance. These systems are based on a continuous improvement process.
This voluntary process is supported by a certification to ISO 14001 standards, an international benchmark for the introduction of environmental management systems. Certification also represents external recognition of these systems by an outside party, because it is earned on the basis of independent compliance audits performed every three years.
We anticipate that all of our major sites will be ISO 14001certified by 2010.
