What are the challenges for EV battery pouch cell adhesives?

Pouch cell is the smallest and the lightest cell technology, which enable efficient use of space and achieve packaging efficiency. It's also the newest ones. Therefore, pouch cell adhesives should be cost efficiency, and adapted to high speed automated manufacturing. They should also provide good bonding performance to protect the module in dynamic conditions, and prevent the inside of the battery from exposure to the environment.

Which adhesive technology could be used for pouch cell assembly?

Pouch cell experiences more expansion and contraction during the usage cycle than cylindrical cell, which factors into the selection of adhesive products. HMPSA could be a suitable technology for pouch cell assembly, as it has a strong adhesion and good temperature resistance. Other technology such as water-based adhesive can also be applied for pouch cell assembly.

Upon cooling, hot melts solidify to rapidly form strong bonds between two substrates.
