As cited in ASI Magazine, the hybrid sealants market’s growth rate is projected to nearly double in future years.  Gain insight into their rising demand and a smart hybrid in particular.

What are Hybrid Sealants?

Hybrid sealants are relatively new to the market. A fusion of silicone and polyurethane technologies, hybrids bond well to a range of materials, such as:

  • Concrete
  • Stone
  • Wood
  • Metal
  • Plastic
  • Tiles

During their formulation process, hybrids receive the best properties of silicone and polyurethane while limiting their respective weaknesses. For example, hybrids offer:

  • Permanent flexibility, weather resistance and eco-friendliness (silicone)
  • Good temperature fluctuation resistance and endurance (polyurethane)

Divided into two groups, silyl modified polyethers and silyl modified polyurethanes, these hybrid products are also solvent and isocyanate-free. While they can be used in other applications, they are primarily used in the construction market.

Why are Hybrid Sealants Rising in Demand?

Recently, sealants have become more sophisticated in response to growing demands. These demands include the push for sustainability as well as meeting fast production speeds without comprising performance.

Hybrid sealants in particular have improved performance, do not require the use of primers prior to application and cure quickly. This helps speed up the assembly process. In addition to being paintable, hybrids are able to meet new performance regulations regarding mold, hurricanes and other natural disasters. These capabilities make them especially important in the construction market, and they are seeing rising demand in building renovation projects in particular.

Furthermore, hybrid sealants offer a high solids content, making them low in solvents. This enables them to have extended product lifetime and performance levels over sealants with higher solvent content. This also means they are not susceptible to shrinking during cure, further boosting their effectiveness and increasing their demand.

Bostik manufactures smart sealants ideal for construction applications, including:
