Each new year brings new trends. Dated colors, finishes and materials on your project’s exterior can make it look old and tired. To ensure your curb appeal is top notch and your building remains valuable, there are fresh ideas you can use, ranging from facade cladding systems and adhesive walls to a brand new, eye-catching color palette with differing materials.

Consider incorporating some of these hot upcoming trends into your design to achieve a contemporary look, on-track to appreciate for years to come.

Durable High-Quality Materials

No matter what color, texture or approach you choose to upgrade your project’s exterior with, the quality and durability of the materials you select will be key. Depending on your location, wildfires, rainstorms, hurricanes, heavy snow and disaster-level winds are increasing every year. The new trend is looking for finishes that are highly durable, functional, attractive and low-maintenance — all at the same time.

A great example is fiber cement siding. The right insulation, which we’ll go into later, will increase your home’s efficiency and functionality. It’s fire-, insect-, wind- and moisture-resistant. It’s also practically maintenance-free and just needs a light water-and-soap wash every once in a while. And when you attach it with the right adhesive, such as PanelTack™, you get the durability of the siding material and the durability of a strong bond, too.

As the Rolling Stones Once Said, Paint It Black

Want a bold, eye-catching exterior? Introduce black into your color scheme in a bigger and bolder way. Black used to only be a popular choice for doors and window shutters, but it’s quickly moving up the ranks as one of the hottest colors for exterior walls in 2022 and beyond.

You can’t pick a more striking exterior than black. It pops against lavish greenery because of the extreme contrast in tones and will make your project stand out against all the others on your street.

Cohesive, Yet Separate

For projects like suburban subdivisions, apartment complexes and multi-use office spaces, cookie-cutter design is out and cohesive, but separate designs are in. Making each designated area or individual unit stand out, allowing for different colors and styles, is on-trend. It lets you emphasize that they are connected but different.

More and more people are rejecting the uniformity of previous developments and designers need to seek affordable ways to vary streetscapes and architecture. Look for materials like fiber cement, wall panels with different textures and palettes featuring vibrant colors to create more of a thoughtful approach to design from a community-focused perspective.

The Beauty of Organic Design

Natural wood is absolutely gorgeous, but it’s incredibly hard to maintain. It’s here to stay, though, because people are using more and more elements from nature in smaller, more feasible ways. Wood corbels, shutters, doors, columns and brackets are a great way to give your project a natural wood accent with less hassle.

When it comes to hospitality and healthcare buildings, designing a building that blends into the surrounding environment makes it more welcoming to visitors. Try to match your building’s shape and color to eliminate any distinct, awkward boundaries and create free-flowing, comforting movement.

HMC Architects designed the Torrance Memorial Medical Center in California. They made sure to create a curved facade with a gorgeous glassy, metallic finish to mimic the soothing look of slow-rolling ocean waves.

Eco-Friendly Flair

In commercial projects, like healthcare, education and hospitality, guests say eco-friendliness is a must. Nature has become the new luxury as sustainability and the protection of natural resources becomes a major selling point for many consumers.

Some actionable trends include the use of natural and recyclable exterior and interior building materials, implementing solar panels to the exterior roof, efficient linen recycling, incorporating more live greenery in outdoor spaces and lobby areas, and incorporating natural and LED lighting wherever possible.

More Advanced Building Envelopes

Education buildings used to be built with low cost, low maintenance materials, sometimes with just concrete as an exterior. Now, designers are moving towards more advanced building envelopes with newer materials.

Many schools have moved towards insulating concrete block walls that provide many of the same advantages of concrete walls like thickness, built-to-last durability and weather resilience, but have additional benefits such as better insulation to lower energy and utility costs and noise cancellation for multi-use classrooms.

School is a place of growth and has the ability to incorporate both commercial and residential-esque aspects of design. The design of the building needs to embody this as more comforting and welcoming schools become the norm.

Easy Transitions From Interior to Exterior Spaces

Direct outdoor connections are a huge trend we are going to see increase in post-pandemic design. In restaurants, classrooms, office spaces and more, prioritizing environments with better access to natural sunlight, air and outdoor space is going to be important.

Incorporating open-air room pavilions with garage-style doors built into your exterior walls create true indoor-outdoor spaces that allow for easy cross ventilation for all interior spaces and allow for expanded floor area into the beautiful outdoors.

Wall Cladding and Facade Cladding Systems

Wall cladding materials are used to provide protection from the elements, as well as give an exterior an aesthetic look. Recently, consumer interest has shifted towards design and material quality, rather than the cost of cladding materials. Because of this, wall cladding materials such as cladding adhesive have been rapidly growing in popularity

Why is cladding adhesive so popular? It provides benefits such as increased energy-savings, extreme durability, clean & easy installation, versatility in design and ability to work with dozens of different cladding materials. And along with all of that, you get a pleasing, seamless aesthetic with no unsightly screws to ruin your look.

Bostik has an innovative, high-quality chemical bonding-solution, PanelTack™, that reduces wall panel project costs, cuts down on labor, and makes site clean up faster. It’s fast and easy to use, creating an aesthetically-pleasing look that clients love.

Bostik’s adhesive and sealant products are the smart choice for wall panels and partitions in the building components and weatherproofing market. They offer ease of use, flexibility and reliability when building wall panels and partitions.

The PanelTack Adhesive System prevents panels from sagging under their own weight, and it absorbs cyclical expansion and contraction due to environmental changes, such as wind, temperature, and humidity. In addition, the PanelTack system has met the rigorous requirements of the AAMA 501.6 Seismic Testing Method, indicating its ability to absorb vibrations caused by seismic movements, tremors and heavy traffic, as well as the requirements set forth by the NFPA 285 Standard Fire Test Method, ensuring the fire stability, flame resistance and thermal insulation capabilities of the PanelTack system. No matter the material you choose for your cladding (gauged porcelain tile, HPL, ACM, PMW, fiber cement, ceramic, natural stone, porous substrates or more), you’ll get a bond you can trust.

Bostik has been a leader in the field of wall cladding and panel bonding with the PanelTack system for more than 30 years, ensuring that their chemical adhesive is innovative, cost-effective and a top choice among industry professionals.
