Learn how PLIOGRIP™ 8300/8305, a 2K PUR adhesive for EV battery cell assembly, delivers fire retardancy, multi‑substrate bonding and fast processing.

In EV battery manufacturing, your bonding solution must hold cylindrical or prismatic cells securely to the bottom plate to provide long-term strength that contributes to the vehicle’s lifespan.

Two-component polyurethane (2K PUR) adhesives are a common solution for this, because they are designed to offer excellent structural bonding, durability under thermal cycling and compatibility with substrates used in battery packs. However, many traditional options may not provide the desired performance needs as well as improved processing efficiencies for cell assembly applications.

Until now.

Learn why traditional options may fall short of your needs and discover how a 2K PUR adhesive specifically designed for the EV battery market can help you accomplish your goals, meeting industry requirements as well as addressing cell assembly performance and processing needs.

Why Traditional 2K PUR Adhesives May Not Address Cell Assembly Needs

While 2K PUR adhesives are widely used for structural bonding, many traditional options can create limitations with:

Performance

Standard 2K PUR adhesives may not be formulated with fire-retardant properties that can slow flame spread in the event of thermal runaway. This can compromise both safety and structural integrity in the EV battery, leading to increased risk of fire spreading, component failure and costly rework or recalls.

Cell assemblies also often involve bonding multiple substrates, such as aluminum and polypropylene holders and surface-treated polyamide components. Because these substrates offer different performance requirements, using multiple substrates helps manufacturers like you achieve a balance of mechanical stability, thermal management and chemical compatibility, helping to ensure long-term reliability and efficiency. However, traditional options may not be formulated to bond reliably to multiple substrates.

Further, you may be looking for your adhesive to provide strong adhesion in addition to vibration resistance, as these properties can help minimize part damage likelihood. Conventional solutions may not be formulated to provide both strong adhesion and vibration resistance in one adhesive. This can mean using multiple adhesives in an application, which can increase complexity, require additional inventory and introduce opportunities for application errors and inconsistent performance.

Processing

Traditional 2K PUR adhesives can also require primers. This is because PUR adhesives rely on chemical interaction with substrates for bonding, and low-energy surfaces such as polypropylene need surface activation to improve wettability and bonding. This can cause extra steps, increased cycle time and more potential for errors to occur than when primers aren’t required, which can slow down overall production and increase costs.

Additionally, traditional 2K PUR formulations are designed for flow and wetting, not for thixotropic control; this means they may lack non-sag characteristics and cause issues when aiming for precise placement.

Further, conventional 2K PURs may have high viscosity, which can make them difficult when dispensing through automated systems without specialized pumps; this can lead to inconsistent bead application, increased pressure requirements and potential strain on standard dispensing equipment.

Introducing: PLIOGRIP™ 8300/8305

Unlike other 2K PUR adhesives that may be used in numerous markets, PLIOGRIP™ 8300/8305 is a structural adhesive based on 2K PUR specifically designed to address the performance and processing needs of cell assembly in your EV battery manufacturing.

How PLIOGRIP™ 8300/8305 Provides Key Performance For EV Battery Cell Assembly

Fire Retardancy

EV battery packs, including the cell assembly, are designed to meet safety standards and minimize fire risks with fire-retardant properties that could otherwise impact the battery and the vehicle itself. Slowing down the spread of fire is critical to protect passengers and allow time for intervention.

When tested in an open joint, PLIOGRIP™ 8300/8305 offers a UL94 V1 fire rating, meaning it can slow flame spread and self-extinguish within seconds. This added layer of protection helps you meet compliance requirements and enhances overall battery safety.

Multi-Substrate Adhesion

PLIOGRIP™ 8300/8305 is formulated to adhere strongly to bare aluminum 3003 (after plasma treatment), Ni coated steel, passivated aluminum and plasma treated polyamide, PC-ABS and composites helping to ensure reliable bonds across diverse materials. PLIOGRIP™ 8300/8305 also has a tailored formulation for excellent wetting and chemical interaction with both metallic and polymeric surfaces, providing strong adhesion without primers. From a performance standpoint, strong, versatile adhesion also helps improve vibration and shock resistance as well as thermal cycling, which can reduce the risk of movement or detachment that could compromise battery integrity and safety over the vehicle’s lifespan. It also helps reduce the need for using multiple adhesive systems, improving efficiency and consistency in EV battery assembly.

How PLIOGRIP™ 8300/8305 Provides Processing Efficiencies

No Primer

Unlike many traditional 2K PURs that can require primers, PLIOGRIP™ 8300/8305 bonds effectively without these extra steps. It is formulated to create strong bonds directly to common battery substrates, even under demanding thermal and mechanical conditions. This can minimize complexity, reduce error likelihood and speed up production. It also helps decrease inventory and SKU management, since you don’t need to stock additional primers.

Additionally, PLIOGRIP™ 8300/8305 cures at room temperature, which is beneficial because it avoids the need for costly ovens or heated fixtures, lowering energy consumption and equipment investment. If desired, it can be heat-accelerated for high-volume production. With 10-20 minutes of open time, this solution allows you sufficient time to bond it properly, helping to reduce error likelihood.

Non-Sagging

PLIOGRIP™ 8300/8305 also offers thixotropy to reduce sagging during cell assembly. This helps the 2K PUR stay in place during application, even on vertical surfaces; it aids in precise positioning so that the cells can remain exactly where they need to be during curing, reducing misalignment and rework while maintaining structural integrity. Further, this also helps reduce waste, because minimizing sag prevents excess adhesive from dripping or pooling. This can help ensure less material is lost, resulting in minimal components being scrapped due to misalignment or contamination.

Easy Dispensing

With gravity-feed components, PLIOGRIP™ 8300/8305 does not require heating, helping to decrease equipment costs and maintenance needs while simplifying operations.
