Construction Adhesives

An adhesive is a flexible material that is used to bond two or more substrates together where strength is required.

For the construction market they are used to build or renovate the buildings where we live and work. Whether they’re under the floors, behind the walls or used in the building’s structure, it’s almost certain that one of our smart adhesives is close by.
Adhering offers many benefits ranging from even stress distribution, reducing risk of corrosion, gap filling and sealing capability, weight savings to automating manufacturing processes, enhancing quality, sound reduction, improving aesthetics and lowering production costs.

Types of Adhesives

In general, adhesives can be divided into two types; structural adhesives and non-structural adhesives.

Structural Adhesives
Structural adhesives or load-bearing adhesives are capable of holding two or more substrates together, bearing the forces involved for the lifetime of the product. Structural adhesives often need engineering solutions, starting with the necessary design calculations, testing and precise application procedures, such as panel bonding and structural glazing.

Non-structural Adhesives
Non-structural adhesives bond a range of similar or dissimilar substrates wherever load-bearing strength is not required. A non-structural adhesive is applied in a more generic type of application, where besides some general guidance on the correct procedures, no further special or restrictive measures are needed.

Steps to a perfect bond

To avoid bonding failures, selecting the most appropriate adhesive compound is crucial. Ie. acrylics, hybrids, MS and polyurethanes, but are these compounds compatible with your substrate(s)?

Step One
Understand the substrates to adhere. What material they are made of and how do these products behave in the environment in which they have to be bonded.

Step two
Determine the product, in this case the technology and compatibility with the substrate and what you are expecting from the products performance. In a nutshell it should be capable of withstanding the environment that it will be exposed to.

Step three
Pre-treatment must be carried out. Different surfaces will require different preparation procedures.
