Bostik’s adhesive selection spans a wide variety of both chemistries and technologies, which allows for a comprehensive portfolio of products for industrial applications. The various combinations provide multiple options to balance function and economy. Each has a place in the toolbox of an engineer or designer. Film adhesives are no exception.

A continuous layer of adhesive, film adhesives offer the combined benefits of convenience and processing efficiency (like Bostik’s web adhesives) with improved application control -compared to liquid and hot melt adhesives. In many cases, the continuous layer of adhesive obtained from a film can increase adhesion compared a bead-applied hot melt or even web adhesives, improving bond strength.

Bostik’s film adhesives are produced by a solvent-cast process. A thin layer of adhesive solution is deposited onto a liner and virtually all the solvent is removed to result in a uniform layer of adhesive. The dry adhesive and liner are wound into rolls and then trimmed to the desired width. The coating process allows Bostik the opportunity to introduce a variety of adhesives and additives to customize performance. As a result, Bostik offers film products with either flame retardant (FR) or non-flame retardant (non-FR) properties and as thermoplastic, thermoset, and pressure-sensitive varieties. This range of capabilities provides options to fit individual applications from aerospace to textiles to specialty assembly. The figure below highlights the versatility of this product line:

As with any product line, R&D and Marketing are regularly reviewing products to identify overlap and gaps to ensure a broad collection of adhesive products. Bostik, therefore, is excited to announce the development of a new film adhesive available in October 2015. Bostik’s F10-316 film is a thermosetting, polyester film offering properties to complement the other non-FR adhesive Bostik already offers. The F10-316 film has interesting flow properties that make it well-suited for flexible applications, such as in textile, apparel, or specialty assembly applications. In addition, after curing, this polyester-based film can offer an additional layer of water resistance to laminates or composites.

As with any adhesive system, it is important to thoroughly evaluate the impact on a single application, and understanding the available options is the first step. Bostik offers film adhesives for customers requiring a superior level of bonding that is consistent and reliable. Where film adhesives are the SMART solution, Bostik is here to help.
