According to Future Market Insights, the compostable packaging market is set to experience high growth rate in upcoming years. Learn more about this market and why it is one to watch.

What is Compostable Packaging?

Compostable packaging is capable of fully disintegrating into natural elements, like soil, in about 90 days. Leaving no distinguishable traces behind, compostable packaging also doesn’t produce any toxins during this decomposition process. It’s important to note that compostable packaging is different than biodegradable packaging. While biodegradable packaging does break down, this can happen over any amount of time, even several hundred years. Additionally, all compostable packaging items are made from natural materials, which is not necessarily the case for biodegradable.

Consumer Preference

As consumer cognizance for safe and environmentally friendly products grows, a preference for compostable packaging does as well. This is especially prominent in food and beverage packaging, which holds more than a 50% share in the global packaging industry. Additionally, consumers’ rising preference for packaged food products plays a role in its growth.

Technological Developments

Further technological developments in the packaging market are also contributing to compostable packaging’s growth and will continue to do so. These developments include:
  • Creating new packaging designs
  • Innovating sustainable packaging materials

Food Waste Diversion

Compostable packaging enables an increase in food waste diversion, which also contributes to its growth. A top priority in many communities, food waste diversion helps reduce the amount of food waste going into landfills. Instead, the waste can be turned into compost along with its packaging.
