What is General Purpose – Sealing and Bonding
General purpose (in our philosophy for professional trades people in the building and construction industry) means that we offer products that can be used as a sealant as well as an adhesive. The application and compatibility with most common building substrates can be assured.
BOSTIK CONSTRUCTION ADHESIVES
An adhesive is a material that is used to bond two or more substrates together where good adhesive strength is required.
For the construction market they are used to build or renovate the buildings where we live and work. Whether they’re under the floors, behind the walls or used in the building’s structure, it’s almost certain that one of our smart adhesives is close by.
Like Hybrid sealants, hybrid adhesives are the fast-growing flexible adhesive technology. They combine the advantage of paintability, bubble-free curing and applicability to damp substrates. In addition, hybrid adhesives contain no isocyanates and have low VOC, making them ideal for green builds.
TYPES OF ADHESIVES
In general adhesives can be divided into two types: structural adhesives and non-structural adhesives.
Structural Adhesives: Structural adhesives or load-bearing adhesives are capable of holding two or more substrates together, bearing the forces involved for the lifetime of the product. Structural adhesives often need engineering solutions, starting with the necessary design calculations, testing and precise application procedures, such as panel bonding and structural glazing.
Non-structural Adhesives: Non-structural adhesives bond a range of similar or dissimilar substrates wherever load-bearing strength is not required. A non-structural adhesive is applied in a more generic type of application, where besides some general guidance on the correct procedures, no further special or restrictive measures are needed. Seal’n’Bond Crystal falls in this category.
BOSTIK CONSTRUCTION SEALANTS
A sealant is a soft, pliable material that is used to seal cracks or joints where structural strength is not required. These soft materials can accommodate building and civil engineering structure movement while assuring a durable, sustainable and above all functional tightness throughout their operational life.
Sealants need to meet market requirements depending on function and location of the joint. There are a number of different sealant types including PU, MS, Silicone and Hybrid sealants.
Hybrid sealants (such as Seal’n’Bond Crystal) are the fast-growing elastic sealants that use the latest adhesive technology. They combine the advantage of paintability, bubble-free curing, excellent adhesion without a primer and applicability to damp substrates. In addition, hybrid sealants contain no isocyanates and show good resistance to weathering (including UV) and ageing.
