AUTOMOTIVE SHODDY: APPLICATIONS, BENEFITS AND ADHESIVES
According to Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry, over 10% of a vehicle is comprised of nonwoven, textile materials. These materials are seen a range of applications, such as:
- Carpet
- Seating
- Trunk and hoodliner
Let’s take a closer look at one type of nonwoven material in particular, its uses and the smart adhesives for it.
Automotive Shoddy
Shoddy is a nonwoven material made from recycled shredded fibers, such as cotton, which are needled and resin treated. This combination gives the material good sound dampening properties and acoustic control. As a result, automotive shoddy enables manufacturers to meet consumer demands for quieter cars, even in lower end models.
Applications for automotive shoddy in particular include:
- Underlayment of floor carpet systems
- Hoodliners
Automotive shoddy can be produced from either post-consumer or post-industrial waste and offers environmental benefits, such as:
- No volatile organic compounds or off-gassing
- Increased sustainability
- Improved fuel efficiency
