Natural rubber adhesives are a popular self-sealing adhesive choice for certain flexible packaging applications. However, they can cause certain issues, such as:

  • Poor aging properties, like discoloration
  • Possible objectionable odor
  • Allergic reactions for some people

To avoid these issues, learn more about what these adhesives are and why a synthetic alternative may be right for you.

What are Self-Sealing Adhesives?

Self-sealing adhesives are pressure sensitive adhesives that can form a strong bond to itself and another substrate. Additionally, they lack adhesion to plastic films and overprint varnishes. These qualities make them ideal for the following packaging applications:

  • Candies
  • Chocolate
  • Ice cream bars
  • Syringes
  • Tubing
  • Bandages

It’s also important to note that self-sealing adhesives are easily peeled apart from their bonded substrate. However, when this happens, either one or both of the package substrates are destroyed. Resealing is not possible.

Why Use a Synthetic-Based, Self-Sealing Adhesive?

To prevent typical self-sealing adhesive issues, synthetic-based adhesives have been introduced for certain flexible packaging applications. These types of adhesives exhibit similar properties as natural rubber adhesives but offer enhanced aging performance and low odor. Additionally, they do not cause allergic reactions.

However, like natural rubber adhesives, synthetic-based, self-sealing adhesives can be used in conjunction with a primer to:

  • Increase or decrease the adhesion of the adhesive to the substrate

This feature makes them more customizable to specific application needs.
