How to Improve the Chances of a Successful Adhesive Trial

When conducting a trial of a new adhesive product, Bostik recommends that customers follow the tips below in order to improve the chances of success. 1. Detail the End-Use Application and Expectations Before conducting an adhesive trial,it’s important to detail the product’s overall end-use application. For example, is this adhesive going to be used to bond automotive door panels together or assemble a corrugated box? The product’s end-use helps determine the needed type of adhesive chemistry and formulation. Also, note what adhesive success will look like and what adhesive failure will look like ahead of time, both on and off the production line. For example, a refrigerator grade label adhesive needs to work on the production line but also withstand shipping conditions and supermarket shelves after it leaves the warehouse. Understanding what is needed for the adhesive to succeed throughout all stages is important. This can help save time by ensuring both Bostik and the customer are on the same page with expectations and needs. 2. Cite Equipment to be Used It’s a good idea to communicate what type of equipment the adhesive will be used on as well as any brand and manufacturer specifications. Also, cite whether or not the adhesive will be used on a pilot line or a production line. This is important, because the machines on these two types of lines can be different in terms of compression and open times. 3. Properly Define the Substrate Testing Matrix and Note Control Sample When testing more than one adhesive or substrate at a time, it’s important to map out the various combinations and conditions to be tested. This ensures that all aspects are fully considered during the trial. If conducting a trial on an adhesive product never used before, consider testing it against the currently used adhesive (the control sample). This will help show how the new adhesive compares to the existing one. 4. Adhere to the Recommended Machine Settings and Appropriate Power Needs Bostik will submit a list of recommended machine settings prior to the adhesive trial, including at what temperature and pressures to run the adhesive. We will also include a proper purge procedure if needed.

• Purge procedure: This must be followed if switching to a chemical that is not compatible with the existing one. Otherwise, simply draining the tank and running it is often sufficient.

It’s also a good idea to ensure there is adequate power and water sources to run the equipment for the trial. Bostik may loan specific equipment for the trials if needed. 5. Ensure Proper Safety Guidelines are Followed Once the adhesive trial product arrives on site, be sure to properly and safely transport it from the warehouse to the production line in advance of the trial. During the trial, it’s important to wear proper PPE and have adequate ventilation in the facility. Bostik reserves the right to request that customers wear certain PPE if we feel it is necessary to a safe and successful trial. Once the adhesive trial has been conducted, it’s important to do post trial testing. Discuss what went well and if anything didn’t go well. Also, consider what to do with any excess material.
