Waterproofing Membranes

A waterproofing membrane is a critical component used in various construction applications to prevent water penetration and protect underlying structures from moisture damage. It is a thin, flexible sheet or coating that is applied to surfaces to create a barrier against water and other liquids.

The primary purpose of a waterproofing membrane is to ensure the integrity of buildings and structures by preventing water ingress. It is commonly used in areas such as roofs, basements, bathrooms, balconies, and swimming pools, where water exposure and potential leaks are a concern.

The installation of a waterproofing membrane typically involves cleaning and preparing the surface, applying a primer, and then applying the membrane itself. It is essential to ensure proper installation techniques and adherence to manufacturer guidelines to achieve an effective waterproofing solution.

It's important to note that the selection of the appropriate waterproofing membrane should consider factors such as the specific application, building design, local climate conditions, and relevant building codes and regulations. Consulting with professionals and following industry best practices are crucial for achieving effective waterproofing solutions.

When waterproofing, always check:

  • Is the substrate acceptable?
  • Has the substrate been correctly prepared?
  • Is the installation temperature acceptable?
  • Which primer to use?
  • Is the installer experienced?
  • Has the Technical Data Sheet been adhered to?
  • How many coats are required?
  • Has the correct thickness been achieved?
  • What’s the warranty?
  • Is it a complete system?

And always remember...

  • All components in a wet area waterproof membrane system must come from the same supplier
  • Must be a certified installer
  • Must meet the requirements of AS/NZS 4858 Standard
  • Different substrates will require different primers
  • All wet areas with a water supply must be protected with waterproof membrane system and floor waste installed
  • Sealants, adhesive, grouts, levelling products etc. DO NOT have waterproof properties
