Learn about Senior Research Engineer Scott Beck's role, his accomplishments and how he helps customers.

At Bostik, it’s important for us to provide customers with the products they need when and where they want them. Our Senior Research Engineer, Scott Beck, has helped make that happen since 1995. We sat down with him to learn more about his experience working at Bostik and what he’s done to help customers.

Q: Given your length of service, we’re especially interested to know: What brought you to Bostik, and what about that role helped cause you to stay?

A: Prior to joining Bostik, I had experience repairing industrial equipment in the coatings industry and a background in electronics. When I saw a job opening at Bostik, I felt it was a great opportunity to build on that experience and my passion to optimize equipment. In 1995, I started working on our P1 coater for diaper applications, conducting trials for key customers by assessing which adhesives worked best for their given diaper components. I especially liked getting to replicate in-house exactly what the customers were trying to do at their own facilities. This helped me better understand their processes and know what they needed to do to their equipment to produce the right diaper product as efficiently as possible.

Trialing products in our facility on customers’ behalf contributed to why I’ve been with Bostik so long. I liked – and continue to like – the ability to help make it easier for them to manufacture products. Now, I work within our Durable Goods technical service department, focusing on adhesive application equipment and assisting with troubleshooting for both internal and external needs. For example, I help ensure the equipment is optimized for a given application and that the right amount of adhesive is dispensed so that our customers’ performance and processing requirements are met.

Q: What is one major change you’d experienced at Bostik since starting in 1995, and what have you liked best about that change?

A: To pick one major change, I’ll share how our laminations group started. Back in 1995, I was part of a group solely trialing adhesives with the diaper components our customers provided. Then, a customer approached us with a brand-new market concept for a home construction application. Rather than providing the adhesive and processing recommendations, the customer wanted us to produce an end-use product for the application. This occurred at a time when we also had just acquired the ability to produce butyl adhesives in-house, which proved key in our ability to meet this customer’s needs. In my opinion, this customer request marked a significant change for us, as it caused the inception of our laminations group, which is still in effect today. We no longer “just” trialed adhesives; instead, we were able manufacture a fully finished product for certain applications using our lamination capabilities.

This served as memorable moment for me, because it also is when I learned:

“Bostik is the type of company that doesn’t turn down a project or a customer in need; rather, we rise to the challenges posed, think about ways to work through them together, experiment, learn and ultimately accomplish the project in an innovative way.”

Q: What are key accomplishments you’ve had since you started?

A: Over my years at Bostik, I’ve been proud to be part of many equipment and process-related projects that have helped customers. For example, I had the opportunity to be directly involved in redesigning the production line so that we could more easily meet a customer’s rising throughput. This conversion was not a simple task and took a lot of dedication and teamwork to accomplish. Bostik really invested in us and gave us the skills and confidence to come up with an innovative, in-house concept. Because our concept ultimately worked and enabled us to support growing volume demands, it's one of my key professional accomplishments to date.

However, these projects and successes would not have been the same for me without the great people I’ve worked with to accomplish them. For example, by working together as a team, I’ve come to have an appreciation for the entire manufacturing process – from development to end-use product. There are a lot of complexities, and it’s important for everyone to contribute their expertise. No matter how small of part, everyone’s insight has a big impact.

Q: As we chatted about, you’ve been with Bostik a long time! What do you feel the future will hold for you?

A: When I started in 1995, I never expected I’d be here for well over two decades! I’ve really appreciated my time with Bostik and the investment the company has made in its people. I don’t know for sure how my responsibilities may evolve – it may depend on how customers’ needs evolve. However, I do know that I’m committed to Bostik just as Bostik is committed to me.
