Understanding Substances of Interest in Disposable Hygiene
Today’s consumers want to know what is in the products they buy. This includes the disposable hygiene products used for baby care, feminine care and adult incontinence. In recent years, there have been questions about specific chemical substances in relation to the disposable hygiene industry.
Concerns over substances found in consumer products are not new. Lead in toys, Bisphenol A (BPA) in cans and plastics, and Glyphosate in foods have gained attention in recent years. These and other substances may be referred to as Substances of Interest (SOIs). This is a term that has been used more broadly since being employed by EDANA, the international association for the nonwovens and related industries.
Since January 2017, SOIs in disposable hygiene have been the topic of a variety of published articles. This is especially true regarding their presence in baby diapers and feminine care products. Through traditional and new media outlets, non-governmental organisations, investigators, and consumers can easily share ideas, knowledge, and information about SOIs, whether or not the information is accurate. This can generate concerns, whether rational or not, based on the presence of an SOI.

In response to consumer concerns, EDANA has outlined, “disposable baby diapers have a long history of safe use.” EDANA has also formed a task force, of which Bostik is a member, to generate a multifaceted industry response that would represent the entire supply chain.
At Bostik, we have also assembled our own SOI expert group. It includes representatives from our Regulatory, Research & Development, and Analytical teams.This group focuses on expanding our understanding of SOIs through:
- Studying the nature and origin of SOIs in disposable hygiene adhesives
- Learning applicable analytical methods and developing detection methods
- Sharing knowledge and best practices globally
To assist industry professionals, and our own internal teams, speak a common language—as well as share a common understanding of SOIs—we have created our Smart Terminology for SOIs in Disposable Hygiene as a resource. Additionally, having a deeper knowledge of SOIs supports the industry’s ability to quickly and accurately share information with interested stakeholders.
