Quick Application Steps (On-Site Guide)
- Prepare: Ensure subfloor is clean, level, dry and suitably primed
- Adhesive: Apply recommended adhesive evenly using correct trowel
- Install: Lay underlay, press firmly and ensure full contact
- Align: Offset joints and avoid overlaps or gaps
- Finish: Install floor covering after 24–48 hours
1. Subfloor preparation
A well-prepared base is critical for acoustic performance:
- Substrate must be sound, dry and free from dust, grease or contaminants
- Remove weak layers, old adhesives and coatings by mechanical preparation
- Vacuum thoroughly to ensure a clean bonding surface
- Timber substrates must be rigid and securely fixed
- Smooth or dense surfaces should be abraded and degreased
- Uneven areas must be levelled using appropriate primer and smoothing compound
All substrates should meet required site standards before installation.
2. Installation preparation
- Acclimatise the material in the installation area prior to use
- Cut to size using a sharp knife, allowing for accurate fitting
- Select a suitable adhesive depending on the floor finish
- Apply adhesive evenly with the recommended trowel
- Do not exceed adhesive open time to ensure proper bonding
Important: Ensure consistent adhesive coverage to avoid hollow spots.
3. Installation
- Lay the underlay into the fresh adhesive bed and press firmly into place
- Work from the centre outwards to eliminate air pockets
- Ensure joints are butted tightly and staggered (minimum 20 cm offset)
- Avoid creasing or folding during placement
- Re-roll or press again after approximately 20 minutes to secure full adhesion
- Install perpendicular to the direction of the final floor where applicable
Provides impact sound reduction and improved walking comfort under floor finishes.
4. Drying & curing
- Allow adhesive to cure before installing floor finishes (~24–48 hours)
Typical next steps:
- Wood flooring: install once bonded and stable
- Soft flooring: install after appropriate adhesive flash-off time
5. Underfloor heating
- Switch off heating systems 48 hours before, during, and for at least 48 hours after installation
- Gradually bring heating back up to operating temperature after installation
Common mistakes to avoid
- Installing onto uneven or unprepared substrates
- Poor adhesive spread leading to insufficient bonding
- Not offsetting joints (risk of weak points and sound bridging)
- Creating creases or trapped air beneath the underlay
- Exceeding adhesive open time before laying material
- Skipping re-rolling step to secure full contact
- Applying outside recommended temperature range (+15°C to +27°C)
Frequently Asked Questions
An underlay is a layer installed between the subfloor and the final floor covering to improve performance. RENO U718 SILENTCORK is an insulating underlay designed to improve impact sound reduction and enhance walking comfort before installing flooring.
Impact sound can be reduced by installing an acoustic underlay before the floor covering. RENO U718 SILENTCORK provides sound insulation up to 18 dB and improves walking comfort.
Flooring underlay such as RENO U718 SILENTCORK is installed by bonding it to the prepared subfloor using a suitable adhesive. The underlay should be laid evenly without creases, with seams offset and firmly pressed into the adhesive. Flooring can typically be applied after 24 to 48 hours depending on the adhesive used.
Floor insulation can be improved by installing insulating underlays or decoupling systems. RENO U718 SILENTCORK improves acoustic and thermal performance, while RENO U504/U509/U515 MULTIBOARD provides sound and thermal insulation as well as stress relief between the subfloor and floor covering.
RENO U718 SILENTCORK is mainly focused on acoustic insulation and walking comfort, offering impact sound reduction up to 18 dB. RENO U504/U509/U515 MULTIBOARD is a decoupling and insulating board that provides stress relief as well as sound and thermal insulation. RENO U718 SILENTCORK is more sound-focused, while RENO U504/U509/U515 MULTIBOARD also supports structural decoupling.
Underlays are presented as products that provide stability, reduce noise and enhance comfort, helping create a smooth and durable foundation for flooring renovation. Depending on the product, they can also stabilize weak subfloors, relieve tensions or bridge critical areas.
The available underlay solutions include an impact sound insulation underlay, reinforcement mesh for substrate stabilization, fiberglass reinforcement fleece for crack and joint bridging, a stress-relieving and decoupling underlay, and decoupling and insulating polyester boards.
Underlays improve flooring performance by reducing impact sound, improving walking comfort, stabilizing installations over critical subfloors, relieving tensions and providing stress relief between the substrate and the floor covering. Some systems also add sound and thermal insulation.
