… the fact that tools like Skype [and] digital collaboration are letting people work better at a distance — that is a wonderful thing.

—Bill Gates, Cofounder of Microsoft

One of the most powerful aspects of digitisation in the 21st century is communication. Companies across the globe—including Bostik and others in the disposable hygiene industry—are embracing digitisation in their communications and data storage. There are many benefits, including:

  • Improved information searchability and shareability
  • Enhanced user experience on websites, plus data collection regarding visitor behaviour
  • Targeted communications based on customer and consumer preferences
  • Virtual meetings and walk-throughs, when in-person is not a viable option
  • Project and campaign tracking and retrieval of performance results
  • Quick and easy access to expert knowledge (through search engines, blogs, Wikipedia, and more)
  • On-demand training, educational sessions, and webinars
  • Informational programming, such as our “Attached to Hygiene” podcast
  • Collaboration and brainstorming opportunities with internal and external stakeholders
  • And many more

One well-established use of digitisation is Customer Relationship Management (CRM). By understanding each customer’s needs and interests, companies are able to send targeted announcements and information best suited to them. Because of our international reach, Bostik has taken this act of meeting customer needs through the use of digitisation a step further. Our targeted emails and other communications are published in seven languages, so customers receive updates in a language they prefer. In addition, our webinars (market trends, adhesive optimisation, regional disposable hygiene trends, etc.) have been offered in as many as six languages. We’ve also updated our website for an enhanced user experience. Lastly, Bostik is launching a blog, to share news and ideas about disposable hygiene.

Adapting to COVID-19 and the work-from-home paradigm

Just a few months into 2020, work-from-home mandates drastically changed the way the world does business. Companies across the globe suddenly had an accelerated course in virtual communications and online project tracking. Those who were already embracing the world of digitisation found the transition smoother than those who were not.

The new reality spurred new ideas in virtual communication and telepresence, along with creating a demand that went beyond online meetings. Examples include online project management tools, information management, and supporting resources that assist customers, sales teams, and other stakeholders.

Digitisation enables new collaboration and brainstorming methods

The number of companies offering various types of online collaboration continues to grow, along with the tools to assist with integration. An excellent example is the use of mind mapping. This allows ideas and their relationships to be diagrammed, discussed, and adjusted in real time. Many cloud-based mind mapping tools also allow integration with—or linking to—other online tools for a more cohesive and seamless digital experience.

As we move forward, innovations in digital communication are likely to continue. When done well, digitisation can empower remote teams to operate cohesively and efficiently, especially when it’s needed most. And that, as Bill Gates says, “is a wonderful thing.”
